Lenna told “20/20” she had kept this story hidden for 20 years, never sharing it with anyone. She said meeting with Rinek, the former FBI agent and author, had helped her discuss her feelings of survivor’s guilt. “The FBI went in and spoke with my mom privately to let her know that Cary Stayner had confessed to initially wanting to kill my mom, and rape and kill my sister and I,” Lenna said. “My mom was extremely shocked. That’s when our lives were flipped upside-down. … My mom went off the deep end, and um, harbors a lot of guilt. I don’t blame my mom at all. Nobody could have known.”
She says Rowland was considered “low supervision,” based on his record and scoring assessments. According to state records, Rowland was considered a “moderate” risk to re-offend. His therapist said “he was doing really well,” Thomson says. Parole officer Megan Thomson reports she found messaging on Rowland’s phone with women he wants to date, a violation of his release provisions.

Detectives circulated a sketch of the photographer, and Alcala’s parole officer recognized him. Alcala worked at Georges Mills during the summer of 1970 as well, and after graduating from NYU in June 1971, he headed back to Georges Mills for a third summer. Christine Thornton went missing during a road trip that year, her remains only discovered outside of Granger, Wyoming five years later by a rancher, according to the Star Tribune. He also got into a fight with another inmate and “had to be physically restrained by several officers.” He spent 14 days in isolation for that. He was sentenced to death for five murders committed in the state between 1977 and 1979, and received an additional sentence of 25 years to life after pleading guilty to two homicides committed in New York in 1971 and 1977. While he has been conclusively linked to eight murders, Alcala’s true number of victims remains unknown and could be much higher – authorities believe the actual number is as high as 130.
